On April 22, the School District of Palm Beach County held its ninth annual International Spanish Academy (ISA) Symposium at John I. Leonard High School. Principals from the District’s six ISA schools welcomed students, parents, and District staff to the event, which provides an environment to showcase the skills and talents of students enrolled in dual language programs.

“I am so proud of the students and staff members involved in our International Spanish Academies,” said Ed Tierney, Deputy Superintendent/Chief of Schools. “This event highlights the talent and intellect of our amazing students and shows the benefits of creating bi-literate, bi-cultural students.”

The symposium included student speeches and cultural performances, putting a spotlight on the work done by the students during their years receiving dual language education. The students in the program enhance their education through rigorous coursework in both Spanish and English, learn about being a global citizen, and develop their leadership skills.

"The 2024 ISA Symposium is a remarkable event that showcases the progression of learning from K-12 and the importance of being bicultural and biliterate,” said Dr. Patricia Ordonez-Feliciano, Director of Administration and Compliance. “It highlights students' dedication, perseverance, and sense of pride in who they are and where they come from.”

As of the current 2023-2024 school year, six District schools have International Spanish Academies: Berkshire Elementary, Greenacres Elementary, New Horizons Elementary, Okeeheelee Middle, Palm Springs Middle, and John I. Leonard High. On the whole, the District has 38 dual language schools, which includes 35 dual language programs in Spanish and three Haitian Creole dual language programs.
