School District Celebrates Haitian Heritage Month in May

May is Haitian Heritage Month

The School District of Palm Beach County is commemorating Haitian Heritage Month (HHM), the annual observance recognizing the valuable contributions made by Haitians to the history of the world. It is a celebration of Haitian history and culture and an opportunity to share the culture with the community.

Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, HHM events and activities will primarily occur in a virtual setting. This year’s events include the annual Haitian Heritage Month Essay Contest for high school students, sponsored by Gaskov Clergé Foundation, Educa Vision Inc., Triple VMC Global Services, and other business partners.

The theme of the contest asks student entrants to explore this question: “explain the major challenges that Haitian and Haitian-American students face in the American education system, and how they can overcome those challenges.”

Schools in the District will hold a variety of activities, and community events around the County will also be organized. Additionally, the Palm Beach County Library System will host several virtual events through Zoom. Click here to learn more about Haitian Heritage Month, and for a detailed teacher resource guide.
