Marcia Andrews Among Finalists for Green-Garner Award

Palm Beach County School Board member Marcia Andrews has been named a finalist for the Green-Garner Award recognizing the Urban School Board Member of the Year. She is one of just nine finalists nationwide.

The award is given by the Council of the Great City Schools, and the organization praised Andrews’ strong dedication to the needs of her students, her profound commitment to improvement, and how she has exemplified significant community involvement and leadership.

“It is an honor to represent the School District of Palm Beach County as a finalist for the Green-Garner Award,” Andrews said. “I have worked continuously to represent the ideals and commitments exemplified by Richard Green and Edward Garner in my role as a Palm Beach County School Board Member.”

Andrews has represented District 6 since November 2010. That came after more than 40 years of experience as an educator in the Palm Beach County School District, her entry into the profession fueled by her passion for helping others. She also holds leadership roles in education, community, social, and civic organizations.

The Green-Garner Award is sponsored by the Council of the Great City Schools, and Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books. The award program is now in its 32nd year and alternates between honoring an urban school board member one year and an urban superintendent the next year.

The award is named for Richard Green and Edward Garner. Green held posts as chancellor of New York City Public Schools and superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools, in addition to being a mentor to fellow urban superintendents across the country. Garner was a notable businessman and board president of Denver Public Schools who helped establish and fund the award.

The winner of the Green-Garner Award will receive a $10,000 college scholarship for a graduating senior in their school system and will be announced during a live, virtual awards ceremony on October 21 as part of the Council of the Great City Schools’ 65th annual Fall Conference.
