For many families in the Palm Beach County School District, immigrating to a new country presents a number of challenges. Daniella Boyd, an International Baccalaureate (IB) Math Teacher at Royal Palm Beach Community High School and the Teacher of the Year for 2019, can relate to those struggles.

“There were days when my family did not know where we would sleep and even more days when we were unsure if we would have anything to eat,” Boyd said. “My parents wondered if they were better off here in the United States or in Ecuador.”

Boyd’s parents came to the U.S. in search of better life opportunities, especially in terms of seeking educational opportunities. Neither parent finished college and money was scarce, which is why they instilled the importance of going to college in Boyd and her siblings.

Boyd attended South Olive Elementary School, Bak Middle School of the Arts, and Suncoast Community High School and is the first in her family to graduate from college.

She credits the lessons learned through her experience in the IB program at Suncoast for preparing her for the future. Because of IB, she learned to have a deeper appreciation for world cultures. This led her to travel and study in 20 different countries. She also studied French, adding to her fluency in English and Spanish, thereby making her trilingual.

“There were many days when it was difficult to find the balance between school work, extracurricular activities, and the job I held, but there was no other choice,” Boyd said.

Given her family’s finances, Boyd knew there was no way her family could afford the costs of a college degree for her and her two siblings, but she knew that the IB diploma would pave the way for her to go to college.

“When I felt like quitting or that the IB program wasn’t worth it, I clung to this idea to push me through,” she said. “It really is no secret that IB is respected and recognized by our nation’s top institutions.”

Boyd graduated high school with straight A’s and earned a full scholarship to the University of Miami where she would go on to earn her bachelor’s and her first master’s degree. She earned her second master’s at Harvard University.

“There are no words to describe the overwhelming feeling of walking across that stage and seeing my family beaming and brimming with pride,” she said.

Boyd will be honored at the Teacher of the Year and School-Related Employee of the Year Celebration at Braman BMW later this month.
